Access Gmail on Android Email App

Apart from tens of thousands of apps available to download from Android Market, it also has some pre-installed applications. “Email” app is one of them and you can configure all of your mailing accounts to deliver mails on this app.

Follow these steps to configure Email app on Gmail account.

Enable IMAP on Your Gmail account:

To access Gmail on e-mail clients and mobile devices you must enable IMAP on your Gmail account. Internet message access protocol (IMAP) is an application layer Internet Protocol that allows an e-mail client to access e-mail on a remote mail server.

  • Login to your Gmail account and open Settings. In settings select “Forwarding and POP/IMAP” tab.
  • Go to IMAP Access section to enable IMAP.

You can further configure auto deletion and archive settings on Gmail account. Enable Auto-Expunge to immediately update server when you delete mail on email-clients.

Configure Email App on Android Phone:

Now its time to configure Email app on Android phone, follow these steps:

  • Open Email app on your Android phone, enter correct combination of username and password of your Gmail account. Tick right if you want to make this account as your primary mail sending account.
  • Click on Manual setup and then select IMAP from the list of mailing server technologies POP3, IMAP and Exchange Active Sync.

  • Now again recheck password for the account and fill these settings for incoming server settings in respective boxes. and then click on next
  • IMAP Server:
  • Port: 993
  • Security Type: SSL

  • Email app will now connect to server and check whether your entered information is correct or not. If all the information are correct then you have to input outgoing server settings. Use these settings:
  • SMTP Server:
  • Port: 465
  • Security Type: SSL
  • Again press Next to finalize configuration. Now Email app will connect to Gmail server to retrieve your mails, after successful retrieving you can access mails.
