Amazon Confirms Plans To Launch The Kindle In China

Since Amazon announced a lineup of new devices at an event in New York yesterday, I’ve been refreshing its U.K. webpage in the hope that pre-orders for the Kindle Fire would be opening up to us internationals anytime soon. The US firm has not put a time frame on a possible arrival on its e-reader, as discussions remain ongoing, although it did reveal, according to MENAFN, that it will initially look introduce less complicated, user-friendly products to build demand in the country.

Amazon U.K. has confirmed “Today, Kindle Fire and Kindle Touch are available only in the US,” a spokesperson from Amazon UK told us. We had asked why only the non-touch Kindle version was available on the UK site, is yet to give a reason why the devices won’t be selling internationally, but the news will undoubtedly be a disappointment. The Kindle will face strong competition in China, as and when it emerges in the country. The iPad is – like the iPhone – one of China’s most desired gadgets, however a series of devices from Android and local manufacturers compete for attention. The market place is about to get even more crowded.

It’s likely the device’s will be available on sites like eBay shortly after its launch, but it will certainly be sold well above its original retail price.

Are you disappointed that the Amazon Kindle Fire and the Kindle Touch won’t be leaving the U.S.?

iPhone 4 Footage In The New Avengers Movie.

Reports suggesting that Seamus McGarvey, cinematographer of the new Avengers movie, had used an iPhone 4 to shoot parts of the new film have been debunked, with both the photography chief and Disney representatives moving quick to state that there is no iOS-captured footage in the film.

On The Avengers, I did a couple of shots on the iPhone and they are in the movie. In fact, they are in the ad! I know that sometimes there is no scale and you have to go for the cheapest option, but if you are limited for scale, you can still make poignant decisions that will effect the look of the film.

But, in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter (via Comic Book Movie), the cinematographer attempts to clarify his statement, signifying that the iPhone and the Canaon 5d Mk2 were devices life used on the sets of many Hollywood productions:

“I was talking about how up and coming film makers have access to a whole range of new technologies which expand our options as filmmakers. I mentioned that the iPhone and the Canon 5d Mk2 were devices currently used on many Hollywood productions. I used the Canon on some shots on Marvel’s The Avengers movie,” he stated to THR.

With the director also adding that iPhone footage may have found its way into the ad, both the cinematographer and Disney look to be doing a modest bit of firefighting.

Samsung Seeks iPhone 4S Sales Ban in Japan and Australia

Samsung electronics has raised the stakes in its current legal battle with Apple by seeking a ban on sales of iPhone4S in Australia and Japan.

This follows similar pleas by the Korean manufacturer in France and Italy claiming patent infringement by Apple.

The move came after Samsung filed preliminary injunction motions against the latest iPhone in France and Italy less than a day after the device was unveiled, claiming the product infringed its patents.

Samsung’s latest salvo came after the South Korean electronics giant suffered a series of setbacks in its ongoing legal battles with Apple.

Apple has scored preliminary injunctions against some Samsung products in Australia, Germany and the Netherlands, and further seeks to block sales of Samsung models in the United States, the key smartphone battleground.

While there have been claims and counter claims from both sides, Apple seems to be gaining the initial edge in the legal battle between the two.

Last week, a judge in the US ruled that Samsung’s tablets infringed patents owned by Apple. However, she said that Apple needed to prove the validity of those patents in order to win an injunction preventing the sale of Samsung’s Galaxy Tab.

Local media speculated that Lee may have a separate meeting with Apple CEO Tim Cook and discuss ways to resolve the intensifying legal row, but the spokeswoman denied the reports.

Apple’s Macbook Supplier Shuts Down Plant In China Over Environmental Issues

Environmental watchdog groups in China on Wednesday released a report detailing a 5-month investigation on electronic suppliers that they believe are used by Apple. According to the report, accessory manufacturer Kaedar Electronics and printed circuit board maker Unimicron have allegedly been discharging waste water and harmful gas from their plants in the Chinese city of Kunshan.

Yesterday, China’s Catcher Technology, announced it would shut one of its manufacturing plants in the Suzhou province after it was ordered to cease operations due to environmental issues connected with the factory.

Chinese regulators forced the closure after local residents reported bad odours being pumped out of the plant, after the company issuing an emergency bulletin on Sunday.

Catcher said the shutdown will impact October sales by a fifth, assuming plant improvement works are completed and approved by regulators by the end of the month. The company had sales of T$21.8bn ($725m) last year, with analysts expecting an increase to T$37.1bn this year. Its stock fell by nearly the daily limit of 7 per cent on Monday.

Since 2007, more than nine people have suffered or died from cancer in the village, which has a population of fewer than 60. Apple declined to say if the companies named were in fact its suppliers, but company spokeswoman Carolyn Wu, responding to the report, said, ‘Apple is committed to driving the highest standards of social responsibility throughout our supply base.

Release Of The iPhone 5 to be Announced on October 4th

What’s more, if the iPhone 5 can come close to matching its hype, it has the potential to spark an “iPhone 5 Wave,” if you will, in the cell phone service provider and tech sectors — in other words, a renaissance — one that attracts new minds (translation: subscribers) that previously had not considered the iPhone 5 or even a smartphone, and other tech devices.

In the past, Jobs have been a forfront in the releases of  many innovative Apple products.  In contrast, Cook has have little media attention and have been quietly nibbling his way up the ranks.   The departure of Steve Jobs has resulted in a general consensus  Apple would be a different organisation.  As a result, close sources from AppleInsider believes Cook will host the major event. There could be a possibility the iPhone 5 would undergo a worldwide release, where the new iphone would be released on the same day worldwide.  This would be a fantastic way for Apple’s newly appointed CEO, TIm Cook, to blast his way into the media spotlight.

Intel remains well-positioned to benefit from an increase in corporate and residential information technology spending, with aging computers, Microsoft Windows 7, and bandwidth-consuming applications for PCs providing a tailwind for microprocessor demand.  Laptop-related sales should also impress.

Mockup of iOS 5’s Rumored Assistant Feature

Apple has been rumored to be working on advanced speech recognition technology for some time.

After Apple’s acquisition of Siri, TechCrunch reported in May that negotiations were ongoing with Nuance to integrate their speech recognition technology into iOS. Earlier this week, 9to5mac detailed much of what is expected to be the major new feature in the next generation iPhone to be release on October 4th. The story was met with some skepticism in our forums.

The Assistant function is activated by a long press on the home button. You can then give it voice commands with actions attached that can launch apps and fill in text. Much of this functionality is present in the Siri app, which Apple bought earlier this year.If this functionality is integrated at the system level, it would be much more powerful than any standalone app.

We’ve created this artist rendition (above) of what the Assistant interface looks like based on sources with knowledge of the feature. After a long press on the home button, the screen fades and slides up, just like with the multitasking interface. Revealed is a silver icon with an animated orbiting purple flare which indicates a ready state.

Assistant takes this and combines it with system-wide access to apps and functions of iOS that makes its potential so much more exciting. This video was produced by Jan Michael Cart, who made this lovely iMessage-on-Mac video. It was based on detailed descriptions of the way that Assistant will work.

Iridium AxcessPoint Turns Your Satellite Phone into a Mobile Hotspot

If you are a  traveler. Have you discovered that you sorely miss being connected to the internet while wandering the desert or adrift at sea? Sure, you could buy a satellite modem, but after dropping a cool grand on a satellite phone .you’re probably not looking to break the bank just to check your e-mail. Iridium’s new AxcessPoint may be just what you’re looking for.

Iridium Communications has revealed today that they’re looking to try something new. Alongside news of a new handset dubbed the Iridium Extreme, Iridium has also unveiled their new AxcessPoint hotspot, which allows users to get online and get their email fix just about anywhere on the planet.

Due to the constraints of such a a wide-reaching network, data speeds top out at roughly 2.3 to 2.4 KB/s — slow enough to make the old 56k modem collecting dust in the closet look like a NASCAR engine. With the correct AxcessPoint software in place, though, Iridium claims that effective data speeds can creep as high as “up to 5x, and email transmission up to 15x.”

Sure, the $200 asking price for this deck-of-cards-sized device isn’t exactly chump change, but it’s far cheaper than other solutions. Simply plug it into a compatible Iridium phone and you’ve got an instant mobile hotspot. Yes, the speeds are going to be of the sub-dialup variety and you’ll have to fork over $1 for every minute of data used, but it’s a small price to pay for being able to check your latest Groupon offers while floating in the middle of the Sargasso Sea.

In addition making the AxcessPoint compatible with Android, iOS, and BlackBerry OS, Iridium also hopes that it can make its satellite technology easier to integrate into other products. While it’ll likely be some time before a “Powered by Iridium” logo appears on the back of your new phone.

NBC iPad App Now Broadcasts Full Episodes

NBC upgraded its iPad app Thursday so users can watch entire shows on their tablets. The app, which was released on Thursday, has a wide range of information about its shows, schedules, exclusive images, games, and some full-length video. The network held off on featuring full episodes when the app was first released in June.

Starting Thursday evening, fans can watch all the content available on on their NBC iPad app. That includes “pretty much everything” on the network, though the standard is to offer the five most recently aired shows, says Vivi Zigler, president of NBC Universal Digital Entertainment.

It’s clear the type of promotional value NBC is hoping to get from making short video content available through the app, but it’s more difficult to understand why NBC has decided not to support full-length episodes as well. After all, the network makes full episodes available in an ad-supported fashion on its website, as well as on

Though other networks, notably ABC and CBS, have offered full shows on their iPad apps for more than a year, Zigler says NBC “wanted to understand the business model mechanism” of the iPad before it moved forward.

Before Thursday’s upgrade, the app featured short clips from the network, but not full episodes. The new app also offers customization features that let you follow a show and have it automatically update in the app, rather than having to search for a new episode.

Providing access to content online and on demand has proven not to be cannibalistic, but complementary to live broadcasts, and can help the overall aggregate audience for a show. The NBC app was released more than a year after the introduction of ABC’s iPad app, which does allow viewers to watch full episodes of its shows on the tablet for free. Shows likeModern Family have seen a boost in overall viewership due to availability on ABC’s network site, as well as on Hulu and ABC’s iPad app.

The network also upgraded its NBC Live co-viewing app Thursday, to offer fans the ability to check in on Facebook and Twitter.
